Bournville Cricket Club

Solihull Municipal v Bournville Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 19 May 2012 at 1.30pm
Bournville Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets

Match report Another good win for the boys from the Ville moves them to the top of Division 2.

However, after heavy rain on Friday night, combined with the forecast dull and cold day for the game, thoughts were it might not be on. However Saturday morning came and went and, with no call from the Solihull skipper, Bournville made the short trip east.

Upon inspection the track actually looked quite good, but inevitably the outfield was soaked. It would be an important toss. Bournville won and allowed Solihull to have the first go!

ODonnell and Colvin opened the bowling and, with some tight lines, kept the Solihull openers relatively quiet. After 14 overs the scored had creaked to 40-ish for 0 so, with the ball resembling a bar of soap and the run ups looking like a scene from the Somme, Bournville called for their version of Waldorf and Statler. With less pace on the ball the Solihull openers struggled to kick on from a solid start and the pressure finally told as Nash took a 'regulation' catch on the square leg boundary. Ball and Franklin continued to tie down both ends until drinks, putting Bournville in a relatively strong position. Talk at drinks though was of a Solihull onslaught but it never materialised; the batsmen seeming happy to scratch around for 1's and 2's. Wickets punctuated the final 15 overs with Colvin, ODonnell and Ball picking up one each for their hard work. The final over of the innings passed with out any 'fireworks' or incident leaving Bournville a a measly but tricky 158 to win.

Bournville opened well, but a mis-judged run brought some unwanted early pressure. However some nice shots from Colvin steadied the ship pushed the score to 50 of 15 overs. However, the loss of Mustafa and another run out (after a poor call from Colvin - oops!) piled the pressure back on BCC.

In came Farrington at 5 and, along with Colvin, rebuilt the innings calmly pushing the score on to 81. Unfortunately, it wasn't the end of the drama. A rush of blood did for Colvin whilst 2 quick wickets, including a Golden Duck for 'Steve Guttenburg' perked up a deflated Solihull and gave them a sniff of victory. Bournville needed only 40 runs but had just 4 wickets remaining!

Luckily, with Farrington still at the crease, they needn't have worried. After first celebrating his 50, he was able to finally cut loose and punish some sloppy bowling. In the 42nd over he managed to polish of the required runs with ease, finishing the match with a 4 crashed through point.

Another great result for BCC to lighten an otherwise gloomy day. Good bowling and a classy knock from Danish proved enough for a Bournville team who never really had to get out of 2 gear (ok maybe 3rd!)

Well done to all who played! :)

BCC move on to another away day, this time at Aston Unity.
